Artworks presentation
Becoming one, diving, immersing oneself into the universe of images, feeling its fluidity and evanescence, a mirror of the atmosphere where air, Earth and bodies are all impregnated, intimately entwined with water particles, without any possible barrier or distance.
In every work in the series, the images are bathed in an aquatic atmosphere, whether in the form of a cloud, a river, a sea, a pond, or a pool.
Immersion means also disorientation, falling into an off-ground and gravity-less space, without landmarks or compass. Confusing or doubling the film’s linear temporality, these transient animations introduce a multiplicity of dimensions into the screen space, where the images circulate in depth as much as in time. Without beginning, end or even significant event, the animation, so slow and ethereal, captivates, amazes the gaze, to better capsize it beyond the frame, outside of time…
In the world of images, we were still trying to understand how the situation had gone so quickly awry, the overflow, the rising oceans, the data deluge, the torrents of the new generation… Everything had to be rebuilt…
Republic of Image is the hypothesis of a world of images, autonomous, strange and fluid, like an infinite ocean of images, within which the people of images tirelessly try to escape from chaos, find a common sense and rebuild a democracy…
Through this speculative fiction and these image compositions, the artist metaphorically questions the digital age, how it liquifies all the world’s material and immaterial architectures, overturns and disorients… to better enjoy the poetics of images.
Exhibition presentation
In collaboration with 1703, DANAE is pleased to introduce The Poetics of Water, a groupshow curated by Elisabeth Karolyi, with artists Republic of Images (Raphaële Bidault-Waddington’s Web3 Image Lab) Bianca Shonee Arroyo, Daniel Bourgais, Nikolas Chasser Skilbeck, Mihai Grecu, Kalen Iwamoto et Julien Silvano, Sasha Katz, Minuit, Sybil Montet, Jacques Perconte, and Sarah Ridgley.
Water it talkative. It speaks of creation, beauty, the passing of time and the earth beneath our feet. It conceals mysteries and surely hides treasures. Water has always carried a strong symbolism. Depending on the culture and the era, it is regenerative, purifying, protective, destructive… today it’s fragile. Since the dawn of time, it has inspired artists and nourished their representations. A perfect pretext for purely formal explorations, before the notion of abstract art even emerged! The artworks of this exhibition are no exception. Through digital means – video, compression, superimposition, scanning, alteration of tones and colors, motion, algorithms and 3D – the artists tirelessly take nature both as model and subject. And it’s about environment, life, death, but also of information overload and, of course, artificial intelligence.
